Automated Slide Stainers move racks of tissue or cell slides through timed reagent, wash and drying stations. Each slide in a run gets the same staining. Linear slide stainers hold 14 to 20 reagent cups and up to 10 wash stations. Reagent cups hold 135 to 1500 ml. Multiline models offer 26 to 36 stations and process 200 to 400 slides per hour. Each rack holds 30 slides. Station times range from a few seconds to 59 minutes. A drying oven finishes slides ready for coverslipping. Stored programs repeat routine and special stain sequences. Typical uses include hematoxylin and eosin, Papanicolaou cytology and special stains in hospital pathology labs.
