Autoclaves sterilise instruments, media, glassware and waste with saturated steam under pressure, which kills bacteria, viruses and heat-resistant spores far faster than dry heat at the same temperature. Cycles run at 121 to 134 degrees C and 15 to 30 psi. Tabletop Class B units from 18 to 80 L draw a pulsed vacuum to remove air from hollow and porous loads, Class N units handle solid unwrapped items, and Class S units cover defined load types in between.
